For the production of this product, two standards, UPE and UPN, are considered, and their difference is in the size of the stud wings. In this way, in UPE studs, the wings are parallel to each other and have the shape of the English letter C. But according to the UPN standard, the stud has conical wings. This product is produced in the shape of the English letter U.

This metal product is mostly used for construction and restoration of architectural buildings. However, it is also used in other places. Among the most important applications of studs, we can mention the following:

Types of studs based on production method

Fabric studs

It is a common type of studs, which are produced by hot or cold rolling method. In the production of fabric studs, first steel ingots with special characteristics are melted. This is done in a furnace with a very high temperature (926 degrees Celsius). Then the molten ingot is made into a stud. This production method is called rolled or fabric.

To shape the ingots after softening, special rollers are used. These products can be produced by cold or hot rolling. According to experts, studs produced by hot rolling method do not have much resistance. Because there is not much time to shape the billet and it is done quickly.

Some ingots are very thick or their shape is special, so they do not use the hot rolling method for them. In these cases, they use the head rolling method to produce studs. The quality of cold-rolled studs is higher than that of hot-rolled studs. Because it takes more time to shape them. As a result, they have higher strength and durability.

Percy’s stud

Another type of studs based on the production method are in the form of a press. These products are no longer made from ingots. Rather, steel sheet is used in their production. To produce press studs, first the sheets are cut in the specified thicknesses. Then they are bent from the predetermined part to form the stud.

According to experts, press studs have a lower quality than the fabric type.

Types of studs based on appearance and shape

Another way to categorize the types of studs available in the market is to classify them based on their appearance. Therefore, two types of studs, simple and mesh, are available in the market. Each of these products has its own characteristics, which can be explained as follows:

Simple studs

These metal products may be produced by cold rolling or hot rolling. It is also possible to produce simple studs using the press machine method. For their production, simple steel sheets are used, which are between 5 and 22 sizes. Their height is between 3 and 40 cm.

Simple studs are used to produce car cabins, frames and frameworks for industrial machines and load-bearing bridges.

Mesh studs

Another type of these metal products are produced in the form of a mesh. Being mesh means the presence of holes that can be seen on the surface of the stud. The purpose of creating these holes is to use for fastening bolts and nuts. Their most important application is to produce light steel structures or shelves.

Classification of studs based on weight

Another method used to classify metal studs is by weight. Therefore, studs are available in the market in two forms, heavy and light. The features and specifications of each product are:

Light studs

The weight of these metal products is lower than the value specified in the Stahl table. They are used for marine structures, truck skeletons, building renovations, and timber construction. The production of light studs is more common in Iranian factories.

Heavy studs

Another type of studs is produced with a weight higher than the value specified in the Stahl table. This table is the main standard of steel profiles. Heavy studs are produced in Iranian and European steel factories.

The difference between light and heavy studs, in addition to weight, is determined by product dimensions and other standards followed during product production. The price of these two studs is different due to their weight. For large projects, they use heavy studs.

Galvanized studs

In other countries of the world, other standards are used to produce these widely used profiles, which include DIN-1026, NF A 45-255, DIN EN ISO12944-3 standards. In Iran, the same two standards that we explained are used.

What is the reason for using studs in construction?

The technical specifications of a stud include the width and thickness of the wing, the height of the flange, the cross-sectional area, etc. Construction engineers consider all its features when using this product. Among the reasons for using studs in construction, we can mention the following.

Use for greater strength of walls

One of the reasons for using studs for construction is to increase the strength and resistance of the walls. So that these products are used in places like workshops, warehouses and garages. Studs are installed vertically in the walls to support the weight of the building. In this way, by creating a metal scaffolding, the stud can protect the wall like a wooden scaffolding.

Since the studs have light weight and resistant alloy, they are effective in increasing the endurance of the walls of a building. The strength of metal studs is higher than the wooden type. On the other hand, it is easier to bend and weld them than the wooden type. Wooden studs are connected to each other with the help of nails, which are not durable and strong.

Use for roofs

For this reason, it is said to use light and resistant metals and materials for walls and ceilings as much as possible. The rafter is one of the light profiles that can increase the strength of the roof and at the same time do not overpower its weight. Gable gutters are the most important type of these products, which are used for the roof and direct water to the ground.

The studs used on the roof start from the arch of the roof and extend to the edges. Although wooden studs are lighter than the metal type, they do not have the strength of these products. Steel studs are more resistant than wooden types of trusses.

Use studs for door and window frames

Frames made of studs are more resistant to pressure and impact. To prepare a frame, four pieces of studs are cut to obtain the length and width of the frame. Then they are connected to each other by welding method. Finally, the frame is placed in the desired part (inside the wall) and it is fixed with plaster and cement. The back part of the stud is used for installing window and door frames. In this way, the hinge of the door is added to it with the help of a drill and the lock part is added by cutting.

Frames made using studs are safer than wood. These tools are used to make the fire door frame or the doors that are in the lower floors.

The car frame is another application of studs that must be very durable. This product is used for main rails and other parts of cars and even trucks.
